Rescue Workers Recover Two Bodies From Lekki Building Collapse

Rescue workers have recovered two dead bodies from the rubbles of a collapsed seven-storey building on Oba Idowu Oniru Street, Lekki area of Lagos State.

Naija News earlier reported that the seven-storey building was under construction when it collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, September 4, 2022.

Speaking with reporters, Zonal Coordinator South West, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the rescue operations were still ongoing to save the remaining trapped persons under the rubbles.

Farinloye said emergency responders at the scene included the Nigerian Police Force, NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), State Fire Service and the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

Also confirming the development, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in a situation report said two bodies were recovered from the rubbles.

He said:  “Situation report on the collapsed building at Oba Idowu Oniru Street beside Ave Maria Hospital.

“The agency responded to a distress call at the above-mentioned location and activated its response plan. Upon arrival at the scene, an uncompleted seven-storey building undergoing construction was found to have collapsed.

“Six people are reported to be trapped under the rubble of the collapsed structure. Two bodies have been located and recovered thus far. Operation ongoing.”

Earlier, the LASEMA boss had stated that operation had commenced on the site to rescue those trapped, adding that the Lagos State Response plan had been activated.

He had said, “Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, an uncompleted 7-storey building undergoing construction was found to have collapsed. No injury was sustained however about six people are reported to be trapped under the rubble of the collapsed structure.

“The agency’s heavy-duty equipment excavator will be required for the rescue of the trapped victims. We have activated the Lagos State Response plan. Operation ongoing.”
